Dr. Murphy actively engages in the community through research, teaching and service. Dr. Murphy’s research and grant funding has focused on increasing physical activity and nutrition in communities. She has successfully engaged and supervised UML students’ in local community settings, focusing on fitness programs emphasizing balance and strength. Community Based Education Engagement with the community for student learning is a primary focus of my teaching for the undergraduate course, Independent Student in Exercise Physiology, 38.420 and the graduate course, Service Learning in Physical Therapy, 34.648. I have developed and facilitated learning opportunities with the following community partners:
Community Based Teaching/Service FIT and FUN is a fitness program that provides adolescents and young adults on the autism spectrum an opportunity to learn about living a healthy lifestyle, and participate in various exercises and relaxation techniques. FIT and FUN is run by trained UMass Lowell Physical Therapy students, and overseen by professors from the Physical Therapy and Psychology Department. Dr. Murphy’s service in the community has extended internationally and she has provided physical therapy services in Peru with the Village Empowerment Project. http://energy.caeds.eng.uml.edu/favicon.ico. Click on the blog page for more information about the Peru 2008 trip. She is Co- chair of the Healthy Weight Task Force of the Greater Lowell Health Alliance (GLHA). Healthy Weight Task Force. The GLHA is committed to measurable, long-term improvement in the quality and health of the community through awareness and successful grass-roots programs. The Healthy Weight Task Force is partnering to support healthy communities in the Lowell area. She is the Clinical Director for Special Olympics Massachusetts Healthy Athletes Fun Fitness Program. She has volunteered and coordinated at Special Olympic State Games with students, UML PT alumni and other physical therapist volunteers. She participated in screenings at the International Winter Invitational Games, Boise Idaho, February 2008.
